Up 16 in the first quarter, the Sun controlled the game since the very start. Katie Douglas surprised everyone with a highly efficient shooting night, and proved to be in form for the upcoming season. She was the leading scorer of the game, by far, with 21 point on 8/11 FG, including 5/6 in 3s.
Otherwise, even though it’s still preseason and everything can change, Connecticut gave a hint on what their starting lineup this season could be. Alex Bentley started instead of Renee Montgomery, and Kelsey Griffin started ahead of Alyssa Thomas. However, Griffin could be relegated to the bench once Kelsey Bone gets back, as she is having a great season in Turkey. Also to mention, Alyssa Thomas had a good game off the bench, adding 9 points and 7 rebounds, while the #1 pick of the draft, Chiney Ogwumike, who was the starting center, had a quiet night just adding 7 points and 4 rebounds.
On the New York side, the only projected starter who actually played was Essence Carson, and she had a bad shooting night with 3/13 FG. It looked like Bill Laimbeer used this game to prove every player he had available, though no player really stood out. The only positive signs were Meighan Simmons’ 7 points and 2 steals, and Tyaunna Marshall’s 9 rebounds, including 4 on offense. However, it is still an enigma which players will be in the starting lineup together with Tina Charles, Cappie Pondexter and Essence Carson, as it is also unpredictable which of the los profile players will get cut from the roster. My projection would be that Anna Cruz could get a nod at starting as a guard, as she has had a very good year in Turkey and girls like Pondexter know her better than the american audience might, and Plenette Pierson could be the starting power forward, as she is a veteran that could do anything on her hands to help Charles dominate the paint as she did when she was MVP.
