In New York‘s home opener at the Madison Square Garden, the Liberty fell to the Connecticut Sun twice this week, this time down 16. Overall, both games had a bad shooting night, which turned into a low scoring game, starting from the very beginning, with the Liberty scoring only 13 points on the 1st half. At the end, the Liberty shot 26.7% FG, and turned the ball over 25 times, thanks in part to the 15 steals by the Sun, 6 from Kelsey Griffin. However, the Sun also shot a low 32.4% FG, together with 2/17 from the 3-point line.
The biggest highlight of the game for the Sun was Chiney Ogwumike‘s offensive game, providing her team 16 points and 6 rebounds on 8/12 FG. On defense, Kelley Cain had 4 blocks, and Griffin had 6 steals as already noted. No other player really stood out, still remaining doubtful which of the Connecticut players will be cut, because there is no clear candidate. However, after two preseason games played, three of them are the most likely to get cut: Kelly Faris, Danielle McCray, and Kelley Cain.
For the Liberty side, they had some changes in their starting backcourt, with Anna Cruz, the spanish combo guard, starting alongside Tyaunna Marshall, showing that they are proving different players at the position. Overall, as said before, the team’s shooting night was horrible, and they didn’t take care of the ball enough. Actually, only Essence Carson reached double digit scoring, with 11 points on 4/11 FG. Nonetheless, the team’s playing without the likes of Tina Charles, Cappie Pondexter, Plenette Pierson and Kamiko Williams, so I guess Laimbeer hopes these players will change his team’s bad run early in the preaseason. It is worth to mention again Cruz’s start to the game, as I think she could be a candidate to be in the starting lineup with Cappie Pondexter. She is not known in America, but she is a proven and experienced combo guard, who has a great defensive nose, and is a team player that may fit well in Laimbeer’s system.
