First ever WNBA Preseason Tournament game, as well as the first preseason game for Elena Delle Donne this year were played last night. As the Sky’s first game, they used it to try every player available, and so no one really stood out. However, everyone had his eyes on EDD, arguably one of the best players in the world right now. She had a quiet game, with 6 points on 2/6 shooting, but she showed how hard she has worked on her strength and physical conditioning during the offseason, putting 3 blocks on 17 minutes. After her first WNBA season EDD she chose not to play overseas, and in fact, she has taken 12 pounds on her body, showing off some more muscle than in her rookie season.
As for the rest of her Sky teammates, it could be said that Pokey used some unexpected lineups for this game, such as starting Aaryn Ellenberg over Courtney Vandersloot, or doing the same with Sasha Goodlett over Avery Warley. Otherwise, the Sky had some good news coming from Jamierra Faulkner, who had 11 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists in 15 minutes.
With respect to the Fever, this was already their third preseason game, but it resulted in their third loss too. This time Brianna January, Natasha Howard and Marissa Coleman were horrible on the offensive side, going 3/21 from the field, leaving Karima Christmas as the main offensive threat for the Sky. Still, this team will get a completely different look once Larkins, Catchings and Zellous come back, so these preseason games are good for the youngest players to try to make it to the team and develop as players. Finally, apart from Lynetta Kizer grabbing 10 boards, it was good to see Sidney Carter (8 points) make her debut with the Fever, as she was just signes by them this week,.
