And yet again, the Phoenix Mercury fell to the Minnesota Lynx. With Seimone Augusts, Lindsay Whalen and Janel McCarville back for the Lynx, they had a good start to the game with a 24-14 1Q, not letting the Mercury get close to them for the whole game. However, even though those 3 players were back, and Maya Moore playing, it was Tan White, the newly acquired combo guard who shone last night with 16 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. But the time played needs to be taken into account, as Augustus played well too scoring 12 points in 14 minutes. From their bench, Damiris Dantas and Tricia Liston had a good night, combining for 16 points and 10 rebounds. Just remember that these kind of players are still fighting for a place in the Lynx roster, as still 2 more cuts need to be made, and anyone among Dantas, Foggie, Rolle, Moore, Taylor and Liston could be cut.
Regarding the Mercury, a few unexpected moves happened to their lineup. It seems like Sandy Brondello, in order to let the paint solely to Brittney Griner, wants to play small ball and provide Griner with outside players that can shoot. However, this means letting Candice Dupree on the bench. Anyway, what Brondello tried last night didn’t actually work, so independent of waiting to see if it works once Penny Taylor and Diana Taurasi are back, she will need to give it a thought. Another surprising story on the game was Maggie Lucas, who came off the bench and scored 13 points for Phoenix. Lucas was sometimes regarded as one of the best players in this year’s draft, but finally she fell to the #21 position, and many people even thought that she might not get a place in the Mercury roster. However, if she keeps up last night’s level, she should get a spot without a doubt. For the rest of the team, Candice Dupree, with 14 points and 6 rebounds, and Brittney Griner, with 12 and 4, led the team.
